Specialty Departments

ACUTE ADOLESCENT AND NEUROLOGY

The Acute Adolescent Unit at Children’s Hospital is a 14 bed unit that cares for non-critical, medically acute patients ages 14 to 21. They specialize in caring for Severe Malnutrition patients and provide care that is focused on adolescent health making it the only dedicated unit in the Inland Empire designed just for adolescent patients. The Neurology Unit is a 14 bed unit that cares for neurology patients from birth up to 21 years of age. The Neurology Unit has 6 dedicated beds to care for EMU (Epilepsy Monitoring Unit) patients.

ACUTE CARE PEDIATRICS

Pediatric acute care unit is an 56-bed unit dedicated to children from birth through 21 years. The care is tailored to meet the physical, psychosocial, and developmental needs of pediatric patients and their families. The acute care pediatric nurses take specialized classes and training to provide whole person care to a wide variety of medical and surgical patients. They work closely with and are important members of a progressive multidisciplinary team with the purpose to continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

MATERNITY SERVICES

The Maternity Services includes 10 LDR (labor, delivery, recovery) rooms, 3 operating rooms and several postpartum and antepartum rooms.  All rooms are designed to create a comfortable atmosphere and are equipped to care for both low risk and high risk patients.  Family-centered care is provided by all of our staff. Specialized staff such as anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and perinatologists are available on-site 24 hours a day to meet any routine or emergency needs that may arise for mother or baby.

NEONATAL ICU (NICU)

The Loma Linda University Children's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit is an 84-bed tertiary referral center that serves critically ill infants and their families in the Riverside and San Bernardino counties. This state-of-the-art facility provides all subspecialty surgical and consultation services, including a neonatal ECMO program and an infant cardiac transplantation program. The Loma Linda University Children's Hospital neonatal transport team is involved in more than 50 percent of all infants admitted to our NICU. Our programs and resources attempt to maximize health-care access for infants in our region. Our goal is to reduce complications and infant mortality and to improve quality of life through prevention and prompt intervention.

PEDIATRIC CARDIOTHORACIC ICU

The Pediatric Heart Center nurses provide care to infants and children with congenital anomalies, including transplantation. A "rapid recovery" program is utilized for the patients in the preoperative through discharge stages. Nurses work in a stimulating environment incorporating state of the art research and technology including ECMO. Patients from around the world seek the specialized and comprehensive care provided on this unit.

PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY/STEM CELL TRANSPLANT ICU

The pediatric hematology/oncology unit is a 33-bed unit dedicated to the specialized medical needs of children, from birth through adolescence, with cancer and blood diseases. A multi-disciplinary team approach is used to best meet the medical and psychosocial needs of the hospitalized child. The nursing staff is chemotherapy certified and trained to utilize pediatric cancer clinical trial protocols within their practice.

PEDIATRIC ICU (PICU)

The pediatric intensive care unit is a 25-bed tertiary care unit dedicated exclusively to the specialized medical and surgical needs of critically ill children from birth through young adults. A team approach is utilized to provide the most recent clinical and technological advances available. Nurses work alongside with pediatric intensivists, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, social workers, chaplains, child life specialists, pharmacists, and other clinicians to provide for the medical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of children. Opportunities for professional growth for nurses include participation in CRRT team, ECMO team, PICU transport team, pediatric grief program, and peer support program.

PEDIATRIC STEP DOWN ICU

4700 Step Down ICU is a 25-bed unit at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Our nurses work closely with our multidisciplinary teams to provide whole-person care in order to meet the physical, psychosocial, and developmental needs of pediatric patients and their families. The Step Down pediatric nurses take specialized pediatric and critical care classes and training to provide whole-person care to a wide variety of medical needs.

Our patient population ranges from infants to young adults. The acuity on this unit ranges from intermediate level of care to critically ill patients. Some of the most commonly treated conditions are:

• Respiratory diseases

• Neurological diagnoses

• Post-operative care

• Home Ventilator patients

OTHER DEPARTMENTS

CH EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT (CH ED)

The Children’s Hospital Emergency Department is a state of the art, 26- bed tertiary care unit dedicated exclusively to both medical and surgical pediatric emergencies. As the only level One Pediatric Trauma Center for five counties we are able to care for a vast array of both traumatic and medical emergencies 24/7. Nurses have the opportunity to work alongside an extensive multidisciplinary team in rapidly evolving environment. Opportunities for professional growth include becoming Trauma Nurse Core Course & Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course certified, precepting, team leading, peer support programs, community involvement and endless educational opportunities.

CH OPERATING ROOM (CH OR)

Loma Linda University Children's Hospital Perioperative Services shine with seven advanced operating rooms. This includes peri-anesthesia units and procedural areas within the system. We extend exceptional care to a diverse patient base. The Perioperative Services of Loma Linda University Health consist of a conglomerate of OR sites. Together the number of operating rooms exceed 40 and continue to grow to provide nursing care to over 29,000 patients of all ages. Perioperative nurses provide care in these areas utilizing the nursing process to ensure patient safety, continuity, and quality of care prior to, during and after surgical and invasive procedures. The Children’s Hospital and Troesh Medical Center Operating Rooms, located in the main campus, serve our largest volume of patients undergoing elective, transplant, trauma, and emergency surgery. As a Level I Trauma Center in the Inland Empire, we prioritize urgent, emergent, and comprehensive medical attention. Our off-campus facilities, include the Surgical Hospital specializing in robotic surgery, East Campus, emphasizing in orthopedic and spine procedures, and Outpatient Surgery Center dedicating in providing ambulatory surgery services.
